Is Warfare an Art or a Science? Implications for Command and Control Information Technology

چکیده
We explore the question “Is warfare an art or a science?” Using a framework of five modes of thinking based on Jungian psychology, we answer this question by reviewing the classical writings of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz, and conclude that understanding of people and lateral thinking are the most important modes of thinking associated with C2. This leads to a number of suggestions for the design of C2 Information Systems, particularly that they should provide increased emphasis on communications, group-working and brain-storming tools, and interoperability.

Complexity Theory and Network Centric Warfare
About the CCRP The Command and Control Research Program (CCRP) has the mission of improving DoD's understanding of the national security implications of the Information Age. Focusing upon improving both the state of the art and the state of the practice of command and control, the CCRP helps DoD take full advantage of the opportunities afforded by emerging technologies. The CCRP pursues a broad...
متن کاملAsia - Pacific Security Studies Defense Transformation and the Asia Pacific Implications for Regional Militaries
Currently, defense transformation is driven and enabled primarily by advances in information technologies (IT) and network-centric warfare. Key characteristics of a modern transformed force include: new command, control, communications, computing, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), networked with weapons and platforms; shared situational awareness; more accurate and standof...
متن کاملTransforming Warfare with Effects- Based Joint Operations
Editorial Abstract: What used to be science fiction is becoming reality. Command, control, in telligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C2ISR) technology has so progressed that it may soon be possible to direct warfare in real time from or through C2ISR platforms. Colonel Bing ham introduces such a concept of effects-based joint operations that would give commanders in chief unprecedented...
متن کاملInformation Warfare and Deception
This paper examines the history of the phenomenon of Information Warfare and the increasingly dominant role that deception is taking within its framework. The concept of information warfare began as a technology oriented tactic to gain information dominance by superior command and control. This soon developed into a realization of the power of information as both a ‘weapon’ as well as a ‘target...
متن کاملIncremental Predictive Command of Velocity to Be Gained Guidance Method
In this paper, a new incremental predictive guidance method based on implicit form of velocity to be gained algorithm is proposed. In this approach, the generalized incremental predictive control (GIPC) approach is applied to the linearized model for compensating the guidance error. Instead of using the present state in popular model based predictive controller (MPC), in the new method both pre...
